Vitamin C and Oral Health
Vitamin C plays a vital role in oral and dental health because it is essential for collagen synthesis, gum integrity, and tissue repair. Low vitamin C levels have been associated with:
- Gum inflammation
- Slow healing after dental work
- Increased bleeding of the gums
- Increased oxidative stress in oral tissues
- Delayed recovery after periodontal or implant procedures
High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy offers therapeutic levels that help support:
- Gum health: Vitamin C is required to maintain the collagen matrix of the gums.
- Healing after dental procedures: IV vitamin C supports tissue repair after procedures such as implants, grafting, extractions, and deep cleanings.
- Immune defense: The mouth is constantly exposed to bacteria. Vitamin C helps support immune responses in oral tissues.
- Reduction of oxidative stress: Oral tissues can become inflamed due to bacteria or dental work; vitamin C helps neutralize oxidative stress.
This makes it a supportive option for individuals preparing for or recovering from dental procedures.
Vitamin C's Role in Oral and Bone Health
The oxidative properties of vitamin C have also been found to be instrumental when removing mercury fillings. It is pivotal in oral and bone health through its essential role in synthesizing collagen to create new tissues and support healthy tissue maintenance.

Vitamin C in Post-Surgical Healing
Vitamin C is crucial for the processes required for healing after surgery—including collagen production, immune support, and inflammation regulation. Because surgery significantly increases oxidative stress, the body’s demand for vitamin C rises sharply.
Benefits of IV Vitamin C After Surgery
- Supports collagen formation for skin, tissue, ligaments, and blood vessels
- Enhances wound healing and tissue repair
- Supports the immune system during the stressful postoperative period
- Reduces oxidative stress and inflammation
- Helps decrease bruising and swelling
- Supports recovery after cosmetic procedures (e.g., tummy tuck, BBL, breast augmentation, facelift, liposuction)

Vitamin C IV Infusions in Cancer Therapy
Vitamin C IV infusions are being used as an adjunctive cancer therapy that can help lower the severity of many chemo and radiation side effects and possibly slow down the progression of malignant tumors.
Research has shown that increased levels of vitamin C can significantly improve the lives of cancer patients. However, diet and supplements alone cannot provide enough Vitamin C for your body to reap these benefits. The amount of Vitamin C needed to make a substantial impact can only be reached intravenously (IV). Large doses of IV vitamin C have been shown to decrease the amount and size of tumors in animals. In some clinical trials, vitamin C infusions helped patients with symptom management, decreased tumor mass, enhanced resistance, and prolonged survival in terminal patients.
Clinical studies suggest high-dose IV vitamin C may:
- Reduce inflammation and oxidative stress
- Support quality of life during treatment
- Reduce chemotherapy-related side effects (such as fatigue, nausea, and pain)
- Support immune function during treatment
- Improve energy and overall well-being
Some studies show that vitamin C at pharmacologic doses acts as a pro-oxidant against cancer cells while remaining an antioxidant in healthy cells. This property is why it has been researched in integrative oncology settings.
When Clients Commonly Seek Vitamin C Support with Cancer Treatment
- Before, during, or after chemotherapy
- During radiation
- For energy, recovery, and quality-of-life support
- During integrative oncology wellness plans
- During periods of high inflammation or oxidative stress
Your team should ensure medical clearance and communicate with the patient’s oncology provider when appropriate.

Vitamin C and Post Viral Illness and Fatigue
Vitamin C has been proven to be an effective antioxidant in the treatment of viral infections and post-recovery fatigue. This is due to Vitamin C's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. White blood cells can accumulate concentrations of Vitamin C up to 100tx greater than plasma, supporting the body's innate immune response. Researchers have been able to demonstrate the critical role vitamin C plays in tissue repair, wound healing, and overall healing in the body.
G6PD Blood Testing
Prior to receiving high-dose Vitamin C infusions (25 grams or more), Minnesota IV Hydration and Wellness requires a Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) blood test. This blood test will identify if you have a G6PD deficiency, which is a hereditary, x-linked recessive genetic enzyme deficiency. It is an important enzyme in reducing free radicals in the cells that cause oxidative damage. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can become an oxidant and cause hemolysis or anemia (an insufficient capacity of the blood to bring oxygen to the tissues and carry away carbon dioxide) if taken in large doses. Your nurses at Minnesota IV Hydration and Wellness will work with you to complete your blood test.
